Alternative Guide to Animation

It took me a long time to feel ready to do this piece. I honestly didn't know where to start. I ended up starting it only two weeks before the deadline (which I obviously regret now) but I will try to achieve the best outcome possible.

group- both have similar ideas for projects, artistic preferences and we have worked together before. also both extension

Style of work- simple and easily animated
colour pallette

Why we chose to focus of primary research
looked at quotes, didn't find any I liked

Quote I chose:

I really wanted to work in a minimalist style for this animation. I had a look at The Arctic Monkey's Video 'Do I wanna Know', directed by David Wilson from animation company Blinkink.

I love this video generally, I really want to do into a very minimalist style as I feel its reflective of the lack of knowledge on animation in the quote.

I'm thinking of using a very similar style, black background with white lines and a bit of colour to define images, using the colour scheme of Wes Anderson.

I also had a little look and Royal Blood's music video 'out of the black', I really like the colour scheme for this video in the animated parts and the animation style.

To get the style I wanted in my work, I did a couple of (incredibly) rough tests of what I could do in my animation. I decided my work would be better for using a cintique. The tests below are done on a bamboo tablet.

Rough Walk

Talk about why you chose traditional disney.

Rough Mickey Mouse

I am going to try these images in different colours and see which I feel fit my image for this piece the most.

Ridiculously rough animatic

After I did this animatic, I decided that their are areas which could work a lot better with different visuals. I decided to keep in simple, so instead of using the Mickey Mouse part, I decided to simplify it right down and just use the Disney logo in an interesting way. I feel this would work a lot better.

It was my first time using a cintique and I feel my work came out generally a lot smoother for using one.

Disney Logo, first pass

I first tried the disney logo part with the lines starting on both sides and joining in the middle. I decided I didn't like how this looked and that it could be much smoother if i tired it a different way.

"Animation" First pass

When animating this, I didn't realise how rough it was and was originally going to keep it this way. It was only when i saw the full render in full screen that I realised it definitely needed to be redone and tidied up a lot.

Pixar Logo Reference:

I wanted to change to lamp design enough so that it wasn't effecting copyright laws. Mine is much more simplified in its design and I only concentrated on the movement of it looking at the camera for reference.

Pixar lamp First pass

For this pass I just wanted to concentrate on the basic movement of the lamp.

Pixar Lamp second pass

This time i tried it with colour and made it slightly smoother, I definitely dont want to use that much colour in my actual animation and may add some light coming from the lamp instead as I feel that would be more dynamic.

Slipper, first pass

I was pretty happy with the first pass of the slipper design and will probably keep it the same throughout.

Disney Second pass

This version of the disney logo is much cleaner and I feel is much better for the general style of the animation.

Lamp third pass

I tried making the lamp look like it had light coming out of it in this edit and I feel it works very well and makes the animation more dynamic. In the final version of the animation, I will edit it in a way so when the light faces forward, the screen will go completely white for a second so the transition to the shoe part will be smoother.

Edit second pass

After this pass, i thought i was done, but it turned out that when you went into full screen, the "animation" part looked really rough so I decided to redo it to make the whole animation to the same standard.
